How Many Steps a Day Do You Really Need? What a 57-Study Review Found

The 10,000-steps goal started as marketing. A 2025 Lancet Public Health review found big benefits at about 7,000 steps a day. Here's what that means, how far it is, and easy ways to get there.

10,000 steps a day sounds like a medical rule, but it started as a catchy number on a 1960s Japanese step counter. So how many steps do you actually need to get real health benefits? A big study published in 2025 gives a clear, encouraging answer.

What the research found

In July 2025, researchers led by the University of Sydney published a review of 57 studies in The Lancet Public Health. They compared people who walked about 2,000 steps a day with people who walked more.

  • At about 7,000 steps a day, the risk of dying early over the study period was about 47% lower than at 2,000 steps.
  • People at 7,000 steps also had lower risk of heart disease, dementia, type 2 diabetes, depression and falls.
  • Benefits grew fastest from 2,000 up to about 7,000 steps. Above that, gains got smaller, though more steps still helped for some outcomes.
  • Even 4,000 steps a day was linked with better health than 2,000.

In short: 7,000 is a realistic goal for most adults, and if you already walk 10,000, keep going. These studies show links, not proof that steps alone cause the benefits, but they match what we know about being active.

What those steps look like

7,0004.9 km3.1 mi70 min
10,0007.0 km4.4 mi100 min
For someone about 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) tall at about 100 steps a minute. Your stride may differ.

How it fits with exercise advice

The World Health Organization advises adults to get at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week, like brisk walking. Thirty minutes of brisk walking on five days is about 3,000 extra steps on each of those days, which takes many people from around 4,000 to the 7,000 mark.

Easy ways to add steps

  • Take a 10-minute walk after meals: three a day is about 3,000 steps.
  • Walk while you're on the phone.
  • Get off the bus one stop early, or park further away.
  • Take the stairs for one or two floors.
  • Pick up the pace on part of your walk: brisk walking counts towards the WHO's 150 minutes.
